As the Covid-19 pandemic destroyed many livelihoods and ravaged countries including India and Brazil, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that the tech giant is adopting a new hybrid workplace. With some Google employees returning voluntarily to the company’s office, Pichai said that 20 percent of the company’s staff would work from home on a permanent basis, while another 20 percent will be shifted to new offices. The remaining 60 percent of employees will work from their current location.
“Most of the employees will work for three days in the office and the other two days wherever it is suitable to work for them. We will move to a hybrid work week. There will also be a need to be on-site for more than three days a week according to the nature of work,” said Pichai in the email.
Pichai also said through a tweet that he is optimistic about the changes and it will help in doing the best work.

“Going forward, Googlers will be able to temporarily work from a location other than their main office for up to 4 weeks per year (with manager approval). The goal here is to give everyone more flexibility around summer and holiday travel,” Pichai informed its employees through an email.
“Whether you choose to transfer to a different office or opt for completely remote work, your compensation will be adjusted according to your new location. Taken together these changes will result in a workforce where around 60% of Googlers are coming together in the office a few days a week, another 20% are working in new office locations, and 20% are working from home,” he added.
Pichai also informed that the product areas and functions will also offer focus hours so that the internal meetings could be limited. Google will continue offering extra “reset” days to help employees recharge in times of pandemic in 2021.
